Judiciary, Law Commission & Muslim Law: Prof Tahir Mehmood on the Storm in a Teacup

PROFESSOR TAHIR MAHMOOD is a veteran law professor of India. After spending about three decades in Delhi University Law Faculty and eventually serving as its Dean, he moved to Amity University where he is designated as “Distinguished Jurist Chair, Professor of Eminence and Chairman, Institute of Advanced Legal Studies.”

Former Chairman of the National Minorities Commission and Member, Law Commission of India his major interest areas are religion-state relations, Islamic law and other family laws, on which subjects he has written extensively. His books on family laws have been cited in over fifty judgments of the Supreme Court and various High Courts of India.

Jamia Collective is a recently initiated platform of artists, intellectuals, journalists and activists to promote diversity, pluralism and constitutional values and it actively engages with citizens of the Jamia area. This initiative aims at bridging the gap between thinkers working in various fields such as media, culture, heritage, law, science, arts, human rights, gender equality, films, music, etc. The syncretic culture in any democratic society is created on the bedrock of negotiation between different domains of human activity, intellectual distillation and the thought processes prevalent among common citizens. Jamia collective strives to enhance and crystallize this social contract.
